Babe Ruth’s Dual-Signed 1916 World Series Glove Set to Make History at Auction

A remarkable piece of sports memorabilia is about to make history at Heritage Auctions. A Spalding baseball glove from the 1916 World Series, adorned with not one, but two signatures of the legendary Babe Ruth, is generating immense excitement in the collectibles community. This rare artifact, once owned by entertainment icon Joe E. Brown, is expected to surpass the million-dollar mark as bidders eagerly vie for a chance to own a piece of baseball history.

The significance of this glove cannot be overstated. It is a direct link to the past, evoking images of Babe Ruth during his time with the Boston Red Sox in the 1916 World Series. As collectors and fans alike eagerly await the auction, experts predict that the final hammer price will reach an astonishing seven figures, a testament to both the glove’s historical importance and its rarity.

The journey of this glove to the auction block is as fascinating as its former owner. Joe E. Brown, a prominent figure in the worlds of acting, comedy, and sports broadcasting in the 1930s, was an avid collector of sports memorabilia. His impressive collection included this glove, which holds a special place among his cherished items. While Brown may have faded from public memory, his legacy endures through this remarkable artifact.

What sets this glove apart are the dual signatures of Babe Ruth. The first signature, dating back to 1916, was shared with Ruth’s Red Sox teammates who contributed to their World Series victory over the Brooklyn Robins. The second signature, accompanied by Ruth’s handwritten note proclaiming it as the glove he used in the 1916 World Series, was added in later years to acknowledge the glove’s significance in his early career. Additionally, the glove features the autographs of other Red Sox players from the championship team, including Harry Hooper, Duffy Lewis, Larry Gardner, and Tillie Walker, further cementing its value as a truly unique piece of baseball history.

The initial bidding for the glove started off strong, surpassing the $300,000 mark within the first day of the auction. This early surge indicates a widespread interest from collectors around the world, and Heritage Auctions is optimistic about the final bid reaching, or even exceeding, $1 million. It’s worth mentioning that a glove gifted to Jimmy Austin and related to Babe Ruth also sold for $1.5 million in a previous auction, setting a precedent for the immense value of authentic Ruth memorabilia.

To ensure the glove’s authenticity, it has been meticulously authenticated by Beckett and PSA/DNA. Steve Grad, an expert at Beckett, described the examination process as the “coolest thing” he has ever seen. This authentication adds further assurance to potential bidders that Ruth’s signatures are genuine and the glove holds immense historical significance.

Joe E. Brown’s collection, despite being devastated by fire, continues to make an impact in the world of sports memorabilia through items like this unique glove. The upcoming auction not only presents collectors with a rare opportunity to own a piece of baseball history but also serves as a tribute to the lasting legacy of Babe Ruth and the passionate collecting of Joe E. Brown. As the auction date approaches, the anticipation and excitement continue to grow, promising a historic sale that will be spoken of for years to come.
