Historic Sports Memorabilia Up for Grabs

Freeman’s/Hindman is currently showcasing an extraordinary array of sports memorabilia, enticing collectors and enthusiasts alike. At the forefront of this thrilling auction is a complete set of 1984-85 Star Company basketball cards, presented in their original team bags, complete with the highly coveted Michael Jordan rookie card. This set of 288 cards is poised to fetch a handsome sum of $50,000 to $70,000 due to its rarity and the enduring appeal of Michael Jordan in the sports collectibles market.

The legacy of the Star Company in the early 1980s was marked by their bold move to secure the NBA’s trading card rights after Topps’ departure. By distributing their cards primarily through mail orders and select outlets, Star ensured their cards remained scarce, adding to their value and desirability. As many collectors opened their cards for display, finding a set in its original packaging has become a true treasure in the world of sports memorabilia.

While basketball steals the spotlight, the auction also boasts remarkable pieces from baseball history. Notable among these treasures are three autographed baseballs signed by the legendary Babe Ruth, including one with Ruth’s signature boldly gracing the sweet spot. These artifacts serve as poignant reminders of Ruth’s enduring impact on the sport and are sure to attract passionate collectors of historical sports memorabilia.

In addition to the iconic Michael Jordan cards, the auction presents other notable pieces from his rookie season, such as the 1984 Gold Medalist No. 195 and the 1985 Rookie of the Year No. 288 cards. Also featured is a PSA 8 graded 1986-87 Fleer rookie card, adding to the allure of the collection for fans and collectors of basketball history.

Beyond basketball and baseball gems, the auction offers a wide selection of vintage cards and sports collectibles. Standout lots include a signed baseball from the 1955 Baseball Hall of Fame induction weekend, bearing the signatures of 19 baseball legends like Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Cochrane, a single-signed Jimmie Foxx ball, and a Ty Cobb signed and inscribed ball from 1959.

Vintage card enthusiasts will be captivated by rarities like a 1968 O-Pee-Chee Nolan Ryan rookie card graded PSA 8 and a near-complete set of 1952 Topps baseball cards featuring over 60 high numbers. Multiple Mickey Mantle cards from the 1950s and 60s further enhance the auction’s appeal to collectors fascinated by iconic sports figures of yesteryears.

The auction’s offerings extend to unique items like a San Francisco 49ers Super Bowl XXIV Champions ring, a 1926 New York Yankees multi-signed baseball adorned with autographs from Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, and a collection of 1920s-30s St. Louis Cardinals contract agreements signed by Branch Rickey.

Running through June 13 on Freeman’s/Hindman’s website, this auction not only showcases the rich history embedded in these collectibles but also provides sports enthusiasts and collectors with a chance to own a piece of that vibrant history. Whether your passion lies in basketball, baseball, or the broader narrative of American sports, this auction promises an exciting journey through iconic sports collectibles.
