More than 80 years after his passing, the legacy of baseball icon Lou Gehrig endures, uniting fans worldwide. To mark Lou Gehrig Day, MLB Auctions has launched a distinctive fundraising initiative in support of ALS research conducted by the Sean M. Healey & AMG Center for ALS, aiming to advance treatments for the disease synonymous with Gehrig.
From June 2 onwards, fans can participate in an auction featuring exclusive Gehrig Day baseball cards. Each card represents a different MLB team, with the selection of players curated by MLB writer and ALS warrior Sarah Langs. The Phillies will honor Langs during their Lou Gehrig Day at Citizens Bank Park.
These cards are not just about baseball statistics; they symbolize a deeper connection to Gehrig through statistical ties, support for the ALS community, or an unwavering love for the game. Among the highlights is a priceless New York Yankees experience courtesy of Mastercard, adding an extra layer of excitement to the event.
ALS, or more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a progressive condition affecting nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, resulting in muscle weakness and wasting. With around 30,000 cases in the U.S. and 500,000 worldwide, ALS does not discriminate based on age, race, or gender and currently lacks a cure.
Through participating in this auction, fans are directly supporting endeavors to find improved treatments and enhance the quality of life for ALS patients. This event showcases the solidarity of the baseball community in championing a cause that goes beyond the boundaries of the sport.
The Gehrig Day cards feature renowned players such as Mike Trout of the Angels, Yordan Alvarez of the Astros, and Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers. Each card serves as a link between baseball’s storied past and the ongoing battle against ALS, making these collectibles valuable not just for their sentimental worth but also for the potential impact they can have in the fight against a critical health issue.
