Over the last few years, the sports card industry has experienced a boom in sales, with many cards fetching jaw-dropping prices. One notable player whose cards have not reached the million-dollar mark is Shohei Ohtani, despite his exceptional skills and massive fan base.
As the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees prepare to clash in the World Series, Topps has unveiled a graphic displaying the most valuable cards for some key players in this year’s showdown. Topping the list is Jasson Dominguez with a staggering $474,000 for his 1/1 Bowman Superfractor Autograph. The Yankee’s dominance continues with Aaron Judge’s card selling for $324,000 and Anthony Volpe’s red Bowman Chrome autograph fetching $150,000 for a PSA 10 copy.
Juan Soto also makes the cut with his 1/1 Bowman Superfractor Autograph, although there is a twist to its story. The card’s autograph was reportedly altered and regraded, with rumors circulating that PSA repurchased it, rendering it no longer available in the market.
Earlier in the year, a collaboration between Fanatics and Sotheby’s led to an auction featuring some of the most coveted cards in the industry, including those highlighted in Topps’ recent graphic. However, an interesting revelation questions the accuracy of Topps’ reported figures for Shohei Ohtani’s card. Recent data from eBay and CardLadder indicate that a 2018 Topps Definitive Gold Framed Shohei Ohtani Rookie Auto BGS 9.5, numbered 13/30, sold for $350,000 on October 15. This suggests that Ohtani’s card may indeed be on the brink of breaching the half-million mark after all.
The allure of sports card collecting continues to captivate enthusiasts worldwide, with each sale setting new benchmarks and reshaping the landscape of this thriving market. As the World Series unfolds, fans eagerly await the outcome both on the field and in the world of sports card sales.
