This month, Heritage Auctions is set to unveil a remarkable collection of Venezuelan Topps baseball cards, consigned by a South American collector and spanning the years 1959 to 1968. With over 1,200 cards divided into 117 lots, this assemblage captures the essence of an era and stands out for its exceptional preservation.
In the decade following World War II, baseball witnessed a surge in popularity, and Topps responded by creating a partnership with Benco, a South American printing company, to produce Venezuelan Topps cards. However, these cards are now considered rare gems due to their limited production, distribution, and the challenges of preserving them over time.
One distinct feature of the Venezuelan Topps cards is the difference in cardstock and print quality compared to their regular counterparts. With the absence of a glossy finish and the use of inexpensive cardboard, these cards were more prone to deterioration. Finding well-preserved specimens is exceptionally rare, with most surviving examples bearing the scars of time. In fact, PSA, the card grading authority, has never awarded a “GEM MINT” 10 rating to any Venezuelan Topps card.
Despite these challenges, Heritage Auctions recently uncovered a collection that includes the highest-graded examples of Venezuelan Topps cards known to date. Highlights of the collection include a 1959 Mickey Mantle (PSA 5), a 1960 Carl Yastrzemski rookie card (PSA 5.5), a 1964 Ernie Banks (PSA 8), and a 1964 Mantle (PSA 6). Described by Heritage Auctions as the “culmination of decades of steadfast commitment to the art of collecting,” this collection is a testament to the passion and dedication of the South American collector.
Apart from the well-known players featured on these cards, the later issues of the Venezuelan Topps series introduced future stars like Dave Concepcion, who made their first appearance on Topps cards in Venezuela before appearing on any U.S.-issued rookie cards. The auction will include the 1967 Venezuelan Concepcion card (graded 6) as well as cards paying homage to retired legends such as Christy Mathewson, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Stan Musial, and Sandy Koufax.
The auction will also feature other high-grade cards of iconic players from the era, including a 1967 Mantle (PSA 8 and PSA 7), a 1968 Johnny Bench rookie (PSA 6), a 1964 Pete Rose (PSA 5), a 1964 Willie Mays (PSA 6), and a 1964 Hank Aaron (PSA 4), among others.
