Shohei Ohtani’s 50th Home Run Ball Sets Auction Record

Shohei Ohtani, the monumental force of talent on the baseball field, landed another victory beyond the diamond. The $4.39 million sale of his 50th home run ball at auction has shattered records and left the sports world astounded. This remarkable accomplishment echoes his historic on-field performance as the first player in MLB history to achieve 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a single season.

The unprecedented auction, orchestrated by Goldin Auctions, surged past the prior record of $3 million established in 1999 for Mark McGwire’s 70th home run ball from his legendary 1998 season. The global anticipation surrounding Ohtani’s milestone baseball was solidified by the enthusiastic bidding that validated its exceptional significance.

Ken Goldin, the visionary founder of Goldin Auctions, remarked, “Shohei Ohtani’s legacy with this baseball has rewritten history once more, now crowned with the highest sale price ever recorded for a sports ball. The spirited auction attracted bids worldwide, showcasing Ohtani’s enduring impact on the realm of sports.”

Despite the triumphant conclusion of the sale, a legal dispute over the ownership of the ball continues to unfold in Florida. A temporary agreement permitted the auction to proceed, with the proceeds securely held in escrow amid the ongoing courtroom saga.

Ohtani’s monumental 50th home run transpired during a memorable game against the Miami Marlins on September 19. With an awe-inspiring total of 54 home runs and 59 stolen bases in the 2024 season, Ohtani’s name has become synonymous with greatness, etching an indelible mark in the annals of baseball history.
